Through the corona pandemic the issue of loneliness and social isolation is on everyone’s lips. It particularly affects senior citizens. Measures are required to enable those affected ones to find ways out of this problem.
Concerning this problem, the aim of the present work is to analyze how prevalent people are affected by loneliness and social isolation in Austria. Subsequently, offers and considerations, which can be seen as a contribution to support in this problem area, should be examined and illustrated. The question of what paths over 65-year-olds can take to free themselves from loneliness and social isolation should also be clarified by this work.
The clarification of these questions and the treatment of this subject to reach the aim of this work took place within the framework of a literature analysis. An extensive compilation of existing knowledge from relevant literature sources was necessary and could be implemented using the keywords listed. The research information obtained in this way were selected and illuminated in this work.
The results show that measures with the aim to empower senior citizens and change their cognitive behavior in order to strengthen their own commitment, prove to be particularly meaningful in solving the problem of loneliness and social isolation. Because it turns out, that older people hardly face the problem and become active themselves.
From a sociopolitical point of view, there is great potential to counteract loneliness and social isolation. Above all, one goal should be, that loneliness and social isolation are no longer a socially taboo subject. Therefore, it will be necessary to guarantee preventive support and to integrate senior citizens into the planning of measures. Additionally, measures should be implemented as individually as possible and they should affirm real interest in those affected.
