In the past there was hardly any more controversial topic in the area of communication and information technology than blockchain-technology and cryptocurrencies.
The focus of this scientific paper are these areas, blockchain-technology and cryptocurrencies. The aim of this scientific project is to find an answer to the core research question, on how the development of blockchain technology on the cryptocurrency market is perceived by the Austrian population aged 15 and over.
Another goal was to show if cryptocurrencies are suitable as a payment method or not in the perception of the Austrian population. In addition, it should be shown whether there is a connection between socio-demographic variables of the Austrian population and the perception of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.
In this scientific research work, a deductive approach was used to process the research project. Therefore, the core subject areas currency systems, cryptography and cryptocurrencies were scientifically worked out as a theoretical basis.
Based on this theoretical elaboration a quantitative survey method, i.e. an online survey was used to methodically collect relevant content. All the information and data gained in this inquiry was examined in detail through an iterative evaluation and analysis process.
As a result of the scientific research work it could be shown that cryptocurrencies are perceived as unsuitable as a payment method by the Austrian population. Furthermore, it was found that there is a correlation between individual socio-demographic variables and the perception of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.
