Long-term care in Austria is facing considerable challenges due to demographic change and a shortage of skilled workers. This bachelor thesis examines measures to promote the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of care workers in order to increase their satisfaction and commitment. Through a comprehensive literature review, the theoretical foundations of motivation are discussed and practical incentives are analysed. Particular attention is paid to the balance between intrinsic factors, such as autonomy and competence, and extrinsic measures, such as financial incentives and health promotion programmes.
The results show that targeted promotion of intrinsic motivation leads to higher job satisfaction, while extrinsic incentives are an important complement. Finally, optimisation approaches are presented to improve working conditions and reduce staff turnover in long-term care.
