Boreout beschreibt chronische Langeweile, Unterforderung und Desinteresse am Arbeitsplatz gepaart mit Verhaltensstrategien, welche diesen Umstand verschleiern sollen. Dieses Verhalten widerspricht der Annahme, dass Menschen grundsätzlich aktive und sich an Wachstum orientierende Wesen sind. Die Selbstbestimmungstheorie besagt hierzu außerdem, dass die Erfüllung der psychologischen Grundbedürfnisse Autonomie, Kompetenz und soziale Eingebundenheit Grundvoraussetzung für die Erhaltung psychischer Gesundheit sind. Mit fünf Personen wurden qualitative Interviews durchgeführt, anhand derer Boreout sowie mögliche Verhaltensstrategien identifiziert werden sollten. Im Anschluss daran erhielten die Befragten einen Fragebogen, welcher auf der Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSF)-Work Domain basiert. Die Antworten sollte Aufschluss darüber geben ob die psychologischen Grundbedürfnisse erfüllt sind. Aufgrund der kleinen Stichprobe konnte lediglich vereinzelt ein Zusammenhang festgestellt werden. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung lieferten daher keine eindeutigen Befunde.

Boreout describes chronic boredom, underchallenge and disinterest in the workplace, coupled with behavioural strategies that are meant to obscure this fact. This behavior contradicts the assumption that people are fundamentally active and growth-oriented beings. The self-determination theory also states that the fulfillment of the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence and social inclusion are fundamental prerequisites for the maintenance of mental health. Qualitative interviews were conducted with five persons, with the aim of identifying bore-out and possible behavioral strategies. Subsequently, the respondents received a questionnaire, which is based on the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSF)-Work Domain. The results should provide information on whether the basic psychological needs were met. Due to the small sample, it was only occasionally possible to determine connections. The results of the investigation did not provide any clear findings.
