Due to increasing saving requirements and the increasing complexity of communication and coordination, hospitals face great challenges in the future.
Information technology can make the provision of services in hospitals more effective and thus more economical by supporting and optimizing clinical and administrative business processes. The precondition for this is an IT strategy which is aligned to the corporate strategy and the corporate goals thereby ensuring the effective and efficient provision of existing IT resources.
The value-oriented approach to the evaluation of information technology is based on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the costs and benefits of the information systems used. The central problem of this approach is the determination of factors influencing the value contribution. For this reason, there are no objective methods of measurement.
In the context of this work the subjective perception of the value contribution of information technology in the Carinthian state hospitals was examined. For this purpose, a survey of users from the fields of medicine, nursing and administration was carried out and it was determined which role IT currently plays in the hospital.
The result of the survey shows that IT is perceived not as a cost factor but as a service provider and there is a great demand for support, optimization and implementation of business processes. The greatest potential of information technology is the possibility to use collected information, the biggest hurdle is the too centralized IT organization and the associated lack of user proximity.
