Diese Arbeit analysiert Hintergrund, Notwendigkeit und Optionen für die Implementierung von Software Asset Management (SAM) in einem globalen Unternehmen. Der erste Teil beschäftigt sich mit dem Wesen von SAM, dem vorwiegend wirtschaftlichen Hintergrund und dem Konflikt, dem es entstammt. Die Perspektive von Software-Herstellern und Lizenznehmern wird beleuchtet, und Lizenzierung und Assurance sowie das praktische Problem des Überblicks über benötigte und faktisch installierte Software werden als Basis für die SAM-Einführung erklärt. Der zweite Teil beschreibt Implementierung und Roll-Out eines SAM-Konzeptes, um Risiken der Lizenz-Verwaltung mittels Einführung eines integrierten Systems zu begegnen. Installierte Software wird erfasst, existierenden Verträgen gegenüberstellt, und mittels detaillierter Reports werden gezielte Maßnahmen ermöglicht. Die Implementierung wird kritisch betrachtet, und Ergebnisse sowie Unterschiede zwischen Theorie und Praxis aufgezeigt. Abschließend wird ein Best-Practice-Ansatz zur SAM-Implementierung mit potentiellen Verbesserungen skizziert und ein Ausblick auf die Zukunft von SAM gegeben.

This thesis analyzes the background, as well as necessity and options for implementation of software asset management (SAM) in a global corporation. The rst part of the thesis deals with the nature of SAM, its mainly economic background and the con ict it arises from. Both, software manufacturers as well as licensees' perspectives are elucidated, and in doing so, the concepts of software licensing and assurance as well as the licensees' practical dilemmas of knowing what purposes required software has to full versus what software is actually, be it lawfully or not, used, are explained in order to create the basis for the introduction of SAM. The second part of the thesis concentrates on the implementation and rollout of a concept for a SAM system which shall assist to overcome risks classically associated with housekeeping activities in software licensing. This is achieved by implementing an integrated system that can automatically detect installed software and match it against existing or non-existing licensing and assurance contracts, thereby delivering both, detailed and management reports that allow for targeted action based on presented information. The implementation is critically reviewed with illustration of dierences between SAM theory and practice. Finally, a best-practice approach to SAM implementation incorporating potential improvements is outlined, and a future view on Software Asset Management is taken.
