Seit 2017 ist das Phänomen des Overtourismus ein häufig diskutiertes Thema in den Medien und zunehmend auch in der Wissenschaft (vgl. McKinsey, 2017, Peeters et al. 2018). Trotz seiner Popularität ist der Begriff nicht eindeutig definiert und seine Auswirkungen auf die Tourismusdestinationen nicht ausführlich bekannt. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die Entwicklung des Phänomens in einen historischen Kontext zu stellen, die Auswirkungen des Tourismus unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Nachhaltigkeit zu beurteilen und mögliche Konzepte gegen Overtourism aufzufinden und auf ihre Umsetzbarkeit zu überprüfen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es sich bei Overtourism um ein sehr komplexes und individuell zu beurteilendes Thema handelt. Aufgrund der unkontrollierten Nachfrage wirkt sich der Tourismus nicht nur auf die Umwelt, sondern auch auf die lokale Bevölkerung, ihre Kultur und auf wirtschaftliche Aspekte aus. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auch, dass es bereits diverse Formen des alternativen Tourismus gibt, die allerdings bei Ausübung der breiten Masse ebenfalls zu einem Phänomen der Massenbewegung führen würde.

Since 2017 the concept of Overtourism is one of the most discussed issue in popular media and increasingly academia (see McKinsey, 2017, Peeters et al., 2018). In spite of its popularity, the term is still not clearly defined and its impacts on tourism destinations are not well known. The current thesis aims to point up the development of the phenomenon by placing it in a historical context, to evaluate the impacts of tourism from the point of view of sustainability and to find possible concepts against Overtourism, of which the feasibility will be verified. Results highlight that Overtourism describes a complex issue that is to assess individually. Due to the unregulated demand, tourism affects not only the environment, but also the local population, their culture and diverse economic aspects. The results also indicate that there are already various forms of alternative tourism, which, however, would also lead to an occurrence of mass movement, if the broad mass of people would practice this form of tourism.
