Translation task: A visit to Angkor Wat

Translation does not only mean changing a written or spoken word from one language to another. Attention has to be given to the author's thoughts and to the peculiarities of the foreign language.

Before translating a text:

• Read the text and find out its basic meaning
• Read the text again slowly paying special attention to details
• Try to understand what the author wants to say, not only what the words mean...get the deeper meaning behind the words!

While translating a text:

• Translate the text sentence by sentence
• Look up words you don't know in a dictionary
• Pay special attention to stylistic features, grammatical constructions, tenses, word order.
• For idioms find proper German expressions

After translating a text:

• Check wether you have translated everything
• Look over your translation again and concentrate on the impression the German text gives. If you notice clumsy expressions improve them.
